Realtors: What your client needs to know about Flood Insurance

Updated: Aug 28, 2020

Be your client's trusted resource with 3 simple facts.

1. Is flood insurance included in my Homeowners policy?

No, it is not. This is one of the biggest misconceptions Floridians have about their homeowners insurance policy. Make sure your clients understand flood insurance is a separate policy.

2. Can I buy last minute flood insurance?

Yes, you can. However, keep in mind there is a 30 day waiting period before it takes effect under these two conditions:

1) If the home is in a low risk flood zone.

2) If the home is in a high risk flood zone without flood insurance.

This means the policy purchased will not cover damage to the home or personal belongings during this 30 day period.

3. Who needs flood insurance?

We recommend flood insurance even in low risk zones.

According to FEMA, at least 20% of flood claims every year come from “low risk” flood zones. For example, Hurricane Irma affected homes in areas only expected to flood once in every 100 years.
